Red Tide rises and reaches Balneário Camboriú
New water analyzes carried out by the Santa Catarina Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development indicate that the red tide is spreading to other regions of the Santa Catarina coast. The concentration of toxic algae is increasing and coming to the north coast.
The sale and consumption of shellfish and oysters is also prohibited in the cultivation of Laranjeiras and Barra, in Balneário Camboriú, Canto da Praia de Itapema and in Perequê, Araçá and Ilha João da Cunha, in Porto Belo. Since last week, Bombinhas crops were already banned from selling shellfish and oysters.
The warning also applies to oysters, scallops and cockles, including those for extraction (not for cultivation).
The cultivation of the Armação de Itapocorói inlet and Alegre beach, in Penha, is so far outside the restriction, informed oceanographer Gilberto Manzoni, from Univali.
The algae that generate the so-called red tide cause diarrhea and severe abdominal pain. Contamination can lead to death.
