At least 26 people died this Wednesday (3) in an accident with a fishing boat in the Caribbean Sea near Honduras. According to Reuters, the vessel capsized, while sources told Honduran newspapers that the vehicle had wrecked.

Rescuers managed to rescue 47 people from the boat, which crashed about 50 kilometers off the Honduran coast. There is no information about the health status of the rescued people.

It is also unknown what caused the wreck. However, according to Reuters, weather conditions in the region were quite bad at the time of the accident – one of the worst in Honduran history.

According to the Honduran newspaper "La Prensa", all the victims were men and worked in diving fishing. It's lobster season in the region, and shellfish fishing generated US$46 million to the Honduran economy last year – most of the cargo is sold to the United States.

Second nautical accident on the same day

Earlier, another fishing vessel with 49 people sank very close to the site of this late afternoon accident. All crew were found alive.

According to Honduran authorities, the vessel had a capacity for just 31 people and therefore carried more occupants than allowed.

There is no evidence that the two accidents are related.
