Fishermen from Santa Catarina are going to Brasília in early August to pressure the government against measures that directly impact the fishing sector. More than 100 fishermen from Santa Catarina are expected to participate in the public hearing organized by the Parliamentary Fisheries Front, to be held at the Congress on August 6th.

“We need the government to understand once and for all the importance of fishing”, emphasizes the president of the Union of Workers in the Fishing Industries of Santa Catarina (Sitrapesca), Henrique Pereira.

Buses depart from Itajaí, Penha and Governador Celso Ramos on August 4th. The trip is being organized by Sitrapesca in partnership with the Shipowners and Indústrias Sindipi union. Two other buses must leave from Santos and Rio de Janeiro.

One of the main demands of the sector at the hearing will be the revision of the prohibition of fishing in the 12 miles off the coast of Rio Grande do Sul. In theory, the prohibition is for trawling, but, in practice, boats of other modalities have already been fined. .

Fishermen who want to participate in the event in Brasília should look for Sitrapesca's headquarters and register. The trip is free. Sitrapesca is located at Rua Hélio Douat de Menezes, 115, in the São João neighborhood, in Itajaí. The phone is (47) 3348-4833.
