The project aims to include artisanal fishermen and mariculturers, developing, through technology and safety, the quality of life of these professionals.

Considered the largest fishing nucleus in Brazil, the state of Santa Catarina has developed lines of support for professionals who make a living from the activity, such as seafarers and artisanal fishermen. Consequently, the category involving fishing for consumption is also affected.

The State Secretariat for Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development established that, starting this year, it will allocate resources to better structure the practice, an action that includes the prudent occupation of areas related to aquaculture and the acquisition of tools and devices that guarantee the safety of regularized vessels.

he credit transactions will take place through the State Fund for Rural Development (FDR), and mariculturers who are in possession of aquaculture extensions granted by the repealed Ministry of Aquaculture and Fisheries (current Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Mapa) will receive aid from capital and services for the construction or organizational relocation of production areas, as previously determined.

The stipulated ceiling is up to R$ 40 thousand in credits for each producer, divided into five years without interest.

Ricardo Miotto, acting secretary of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development portfolio, justified the granting of installment plans as a measure to strengthen fishing activity in the region, in addition to the necessary increase in security and technology aimed entirely at the sector.

In his statement, Miotto said that this investment is “a recognition of the state's mariculture and fishing. We have great potential to be explored and we are very attentive to this”. Referring to a prosperous future, the secretary stated that “the new lines of credit from the Rural Development Fund are initiatives of the State Government and the Secretariat of Agriculture in search of innovation, technology, safety, quality of life and income for the mariculturer and fisherman from Santa Catarina”.

Security and technology at sea

In view of the new lines of credit, mariculturers and artisanal fishermen will be able to opt for a financing alternative aimed at the purchase of utensils that compete with the safety and equipment of the vessels themselves.

The limit value of this operation is R$ 15 thousand, and it has the same five-year term for completion of payment - annual installments and without any type of interest.

In both lines of financing, the professional who is up to date with the maturity periods will be, as a means of bonus, exempt from the last installment.

Any individual belonging to the indicated working class and interested in cooperating with the project must go to the nearest municipal office of the Agricultural Research and Rural Extension Company of Santa Catarina (Epagri) and request information regarding the application.

Fishing activity in Santa Catarina

Comprising 7% of the Brazilian coastline, Santa Catarina has 337 areas dedicated to artisanal fishing, covering around 25 thousand people, directly and indirectly.

Involving traditions and ancestral knowledge, fishing is a traditional application throughout the Santa Catarina Coastal Zone, playing an essential socioeconomic role for the state. Scattered along the Central-North coast, approximately 80% of fishermen claim that they learned the practices of the trade from family members from past generations.

In the state, approximately one thousand vessels participate in the fishing activity, mainly in the industrial sector, which generates around 10 thousand jobs. The region is also a national leader in raising mussels and oysters, with around 600 mariculturers spread across 11 municipalities.
In addition to these animals, the territory is also recognized for fishing and shrimp farming, as well as other fish, such as dogfish and groupers in the summer, which correspond to 15.69% and 7.0% of the catches, respectively, and croaker and mullet in the summer. winter — 17.63% and 15.94%.
